Melgaco: a 10 minute drive takes you to Melgaco, Portugal. A testament that size doesn’t matter, Melgaco makes up for its size with an abundance of charm. With a castle, Belgian style pub, convent and impeccably preserved medieval center, it may be the surprise hit of your visit.

Moncao and Valenca: 30 and 45 minute further keeps you on the Portuguese side of the river to do a little shopping while you take in the medieval fortification once protecting the Portuguese border. It is a magical land of towels, sheets and dinnerware that can be bought by the kilo – a true Portuguese experience.

Tui: 25 minutes of Casa Pazos is a major stop along the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago. And no wonder, it is in our top favorite medieval towns in all of Spain for oh so many reasons. Go check it out and then we can talk about why.
